Description
Louis Anquetin was a famous French painter who worked in the late nineteenth century to early twentieth century. Born in Etrepagny he moved to Paris where he met some of the greatest artists of the time period including Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec Emile Bernard and Vincent van Gogh. He developed a style called Cloisonnism with Bernard. This style used areas of bold flat colors separated by dark lines similar to stained glass or the Japanese trade Ukiyo-e woodblocks. It simplified the forms of the image and emphasized the two-dimensionality of the canvas. Woman with Umbrella is a charming painting using bright colors and a combination of his own cloisonnism by using dark outlines and a more classical approach by shading and blending the colors.
